Thinking Out Loud

Carpe Diem

By Theagarajan_CML

In thinking back to one of the previous blogs that Keryn wrote titled “A Guide to a Work Week Detox”, I feel like these tips benefit me greatly at this point in my life.

In taking a step back and looking at what is going on in life, what dreams I have, and what I want to accomplish, there is so much that I have in my mind. This is why it is imperative to “unplug” every once in a while and center yourself. For me, it is to remember what my values are and what I want to accomplish within the next couple of years in my life.

Take a moment to think about what you have accomplished thus far. Now ask yourself, does this measure up to what goals I have set for myself at this point? It is somewhat of a somber question, but it is something that needs to be asked periodically.

Carpe diem, a Latin phrase meaning seize the day, is a great saying that I try to hold close to me as often as possible. In my daily routine, I try to accomplish as much as I can with respect to my goals, like to save for retirement, love everyone in my life as deeply as I can, and try to give my all in everything that I try to do. I want to be able to say that I have seized the day and that if I am gone from this earth tomorrow, I was able to accomplish what I wanted.

In going back to unplugging, I feel that there are often more times than not most of us lose sight of what is most important. Try doing something for yourself like taking a bubble bath, diving into a book that you wanted to read for a while, or even taking a drive without a destination in mind. Follow the four steps of unplugging by shutting off, making a list, enjoying a shared meal, and rewarding yourself. These steps may help to keep you centered and focused within all aspects of your life.
